Lafayette House to mark 35th Anniversary during Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Lafayette House Marks 35th Anniversary During Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Joplin, MO (October 16, 2013) – Lafayette House will celebrate its 35th anniversary with an open house and breakfast reception from 7:30 am to 9:00 am on Friday, October 18 at 1809 Connor Avenue in Joplin. The event will also recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Lafayette House was founded in the fall of 1978 by a volunteer group, to respond to domestic violence victims’ need for somewhere safe to stay. Today, the organization serves 1,500 individuals per year, and offers services for victims of domestic violence or sexual assault, as well as those seeking substance abuse treatment.

During the Friday event at 8:30 am Melodee Colbert-Kean, Joplin’s mayor, will present a proclamation declaring domestic violence awareness month in Joplin. Alison Malinowski Sunday, Lafayette House executive director, will speak about the organization’s history and current services.

Coffee and refreshments will be served.

    Joplin Police received a call about an armed robbery on Sunday just before 10:00 p.m. (April 22, 2018). An employee at Charlie's Chicken (2020E. 32nd Street) says she locked the business up and was walking to her vehicle when a male walked up to her in the parking lot. She said he pointed a handgun at her and demanded the night deposit bag. She gave the suspect the bag and says he ran to the southwest. Police officers could not find him.
