MHP investigating after suicidal subject exchanges fire with an officer

Updated:

STATEMENT RELEASED OCTOBER 19, 2013 BY MCDONALD COUNTY SHERIFF MICHAEL S. HALL:

In the early morning hours of 10-19-2013 the McDonald County 911 Center received a call from the Crisis Hotline.  They had been talking with a subject that was suicidal and lived in McDonald County.  The Sheriff's Office was contacted and after some research it was determined that the individual lived in the Lanagan area.  The Sheriff's Office and Lanagan PD worked together to find the house and the SRT (Special Response Team) was contacted because he was threatening to kill himself with a gun.

After more than 3 hours of talking with the subject the SRT team was sent into the residence.  Upon entry to the house they made contact with the subject and he fired a shot at the first SRT Team member and hit the ballistic shield.  That SRT team member returned one shot and missed.  The suicidal subject then took his own life.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol was called in to investigate since a member of the SRT team fired a shot.  I believe that the investigation will show that the team member was justified in firing back after being fired upon.
