The MissouriSouthern volleyball team fell victim to a good-hitting Nebraska-Kearney programtoday as the ninth ranked Lopers defeated the Lions three sets to none.Individual set scores were 18-25, 5-25 and 14-25.
The Lions(4-19, 0-10 MIAA) came out competitively in the first set, leading 3-1 earlyon. The Lopers (21-3, 7-2 MIAA) took a 10-4 lead midway through, but the Lionscut the lead to three (15-12), before UNK went on a 3-0 run to extend the leadto 18-12. The Lions got as close as four (19-14), but couldn't get anycloser.
The secondset was all Lopers. UNK hit .765 in the set and after the Lions tied the set atthree on an ace from DanielleSeverns, the Lopers reeled off 13-straight points to go up 16-3. The leadwould be 19-4 and UNK would go on to win the set 25-5.
UNK hit .406in the third set and led 10-4 early on, before the Lions got to within four at13-9 on a kill from PaytonGraves. The Lopers pushed the lead to 21-11, before a service error fromUNK made the score 21-12. The Lopers scored four of the final six points totake the set.
Graves ledthe Lions with five kills and a block. NaiMontano had five kills of her own, hitting .667 for the match, while AbbyFinder dished out 19 assists. MikaylaAvery had 12 digs, while SydneyWheeler had seven of her own.
The Loperswere led by 11 kills from MJ Massanet and 33 assists from Erin Seele.
The Lionswill be back in action on Tuesday when Southern plays host to third rankedCentral Missouri at 7 pm in Young Gymnasium. The match will be senior night forboth Nai Montano and ErinRice and will also be the Lions' Spike or Treat evening.
Note ...The previously scheduled match on Nov. 3 to resume play against SouthernArkansas from the UAM Tournament has been cancelled due to scheduling issueswith both schools. The match will be declared a no-contest and will not be madeup.
