Lions soccer falls 6-1 at Emporia State

Emporia - The Missouri Southern Lions soccer team dropped a 6-1 decision on the road today at Emporia State.

Freshman midfielder Hannah Cook scored her first goal in her Southern career in the 73rd minute to notch the Lions' (3-7-4, 2-4-3 MIAA) lone goal of the match. Six different players attempted a shot in the match, including three on goal by Cook and one each from senior defender Dana Wilhelm and junior defender Courtney Fielden. Goalkeepers Beth Hammons and Abby Risner split halves in net as Hammons made two saves in the first half and Risner made two more saves in the second half.

The Hornets (8-6-2, 4-3-2) grabbed a early 1-0 lead in the 11th minute as McKenzie Koch scored from 15 yards out to get on the scoreboard first. Junior defender Shannon Thomas added back-to-back goals in the 26th minute within 35 seconds of each other to go up 3-0. Bridgit Wages added her second goal of the year in the 43rd minute as the Hornets took a 4-0 lead into halftime.

Emporia State added two more goals in the 52nd and 72nd minutes as Jordan Foutch and Wages secured goals for the Hornets before Cook would end the shutout with her goal. ESU recorded 18 shots in the match, 10 on goal as eight different Hornets attempeted a shot. Foutch led the team with five shots, while Wages had a team-high three shots on goals. Goalkeepers Yadira Riveria and Melanie Nuessen split time in goal as each played a half making one save apiece.

The Lions return home weekend wrapping up the regular season at Hal Bodon Field hosting the Missouri Western Griffons (2-13-2, 0-9-1) on Friday at 7 p.m. and the Northwest Missouri State Bearcats (4-10-2, 2-7-1) on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day.
