Southern volleyball loses 3-0 at home to No. 5 Central Missouri

The Missouri Southern volleyball team kept it close in sets one and three, but fell three sets to none tonight at home to fifth-ranked Central Missouri. Individual set scores were 18-25, 9-25 and 22-25. 

The Lions (4-20, 0-11 MIAA) were led offensively by Callie Whetstone as she had seven kills and three blocks, while hitting .778 for the match. Payton Graves andKrishna Merriman had six kills each, while Abby Finder had 25 assists and three digs. Mikayla Averya had ten digs in the match.

Central (23-1, 9-1 MIAA) had two in double-figures, led by Taylor Goodness with 13 kills. 

The Jennies started the first set on an 9-1 run, but the Lions eventually cut the lead to just five (21-16). However, Central scored four of the final six points to end the set. 

Central hit .565 in the second set and had an 80 percent side out mark and the Jennies led from start to finishe in the set. 

The third set saw two tied scores and one lead change. The Lions trailed 10-4 early on, but cut the lead to two (14-12) after an ace from Danielle Severns. The Jennies pushe dthe lead to five (22-17) forcing a Southern timeout and the Lions responded, cutting the lead to just one (22-21). Central went on to score three of the final four points to take the match. 

The Lions honored their two seniors tonight (Nai Montano and Erin Rice) as part of Senior Night. Southern will be back in action on November 1 as the Lions travel to Missouri Western to take on the Griffons in a 6 pm first-serve.

    The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) says K-7 between U.S. 160 and K-102 in Cherokee County is once again open to traffic. The seven mile section of K-7 has been closed for reconstruction since the spring of 2017. The highway opening marks the completion of the 11-mile reconstruction of K-7 from U.S. 160 north to U.S. 400. Reconstruction of the northern four miles was completed in late 2016.     Two southeast Kansas residents pleaded guilty yesterday (Sept. 24) to second degree murder and other charges for a cap on sentencing. They both also agreed to testify against a third suspect.
