Missouri Southern selected as a finalist for NCAA Cross Country National Championships

The NCAA hasannounced that Missouri Southern State University and the Joplin SportsAuthority have been named one of four  finalists to host the NCAA CrossCountry National Championships.

MSSU is oneof four finalists to host the cross country national championships at somepoint during the years of 2014 and 2017. Evansville, Indiana, Louisville,Kentucky and Saint Leo, Florida were also announced as finalists. 

MissouriSouthern has hosted the national championships at the MSSU Cross Country Coursethree times, once in 1999, and again in 2007 and last year (2012). 

"Thisrecognition by the NCAA again shows the National Office and the Committee'sconfidence in our staff and our course here at Missouri Southern," saidMSSU Director of Athletics Jared Bruggeman. "To have hosted a nationalchampionship what will be three times in the past ten years speaks volumesabout our staff, the city of Joplin and the student-athletes that come out eachyear and volunteer their services to help host what I think is one of the bestchampionship experiences anyone in any sport can have." 

Joplin SportsAuthority Director Craig Hull echoed Bruggeman's enthusiasm. 

"MissouriSouthern's tradition of producing a first-class championship event andchallenging cross country course are the strengths behind the bid to host thischampionship," Hull said. "The Joplin Sports Authority is confidentJoplin and Missouri Southern will be selected as one of the hostlocations."

    The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) says K-7 between U.S. 160 and K-102 in Cherokee County is once again open to traffic. The seven mile section of K-7 has been closed for reconstruction since the spring of 2017. The highway opening marks the completion of the 11-mile reconstruction of K-7 from U.S. 160 north to U.S. 400. Reconstruction of the northern four miles was completed in late 2016.     Two southeast Kansas residents pleaded guilty yesterday (Sept. 24) to second degree murder and other charges for a cap on sentencing. They both also agreed to testify against a third suspect. According to court documents, robbery and shooting happened on January 29th, 2017 at 2334 E. Zora St. in Joplin, Missouri.
