Animal shelters give hay to keep pets warm this winter

Updated:

Animal shelters are helping animal owners keep their pets warm.
The Southeast Kansas Humane Society held its annual straw day in Pittsburg Saturday.

Patrons could  pull up  and volunteers would load free  hay into vehicles.

Organizers say straw is used often because its inexpensive.

Erica Wilson with the SEK Humane Society, says, "There are  pet owners that either don't think about or can't afford to insulate their dog houses. So its important that we look out for those dogs and take care of them."

Blue ribbon farm and home wood farms and Galen Hiller donated the hay.
