Neosho Police warning residents about check scam

Updated:

The Neosho Police Department cautions residents to be on the lookout for fraudulent check scams.

Residents in Neosho have reported receiving cashiers checks in the mail -- like the one posted to the right.

The check usually comes with a letter asking the recipient to cash and deposit the check, wire a certain amount below the total to the sender and then keep the difference for their trouble.

Authorities say this is a scam.  The checks look real and may even have a bank number on them but they are fake.

They will eventually bounce and you will lose that money from your account.  Authorities say if there isn't enough funds to cover the amount you could even be sued for the difference.
