Area farmers learning about Food Safety Modernization Act

Local farmers attended a conference in Joplin Tuesday afternoon to learn more about the Food Safety Modernization Act, which puts stricter rules in place for food production.

Though the Act has been passed the government is giving some leeway time for farmers to become familiar with the new rules.

One person familiar with the new rules says the regulations are designed to make sure food is grown more healthy.

"If you're using an open source for irrigation, such as a pond open to air, you have to test every week for e. Coli and other things like that to make sure that you are not contaminating the produce that you're eating - that was not there before," says meeting organizer Nahshon Bishop.

Tuesday's meeting was sponsored by the University of Missouri Extension Office and the Webb City Farmer's Market.
