PITTSBURG, Kan. -- Pittsburg State opens the 2013-14 season on the road at the CCA West Coast Tipoff Classic in Anaheim, Calif. The team will play three games out west against Montana State-Billings, regional foe Concordia and Indianapols. All three games will have live streaming audio available and live stats will be available as well.

About the Tournament

The twelve-team field in the CCA Tipp off Classic includes six men's and six women's teams and will be held November 8-10 at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, Calif.

There are seven collegiate conferneces across the nation being represented, including the California Collegiate Athletic Association, Pacific West, Great Northwest Athletic Conference, Heartland Conference, Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, MidAmerica Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Participating institutions for the women are Cal State East Bay, Emporia State, University of Indianapolis, Montana State University-Billings, Pittsburg State, and Concordia-St. Paul. Emporia State, Concordia-St. Paul and Indianapolis all participated in the NCAA tournament last season.    

The Greyhounds and Golden Bears fell in the first round of the Midwest Regional and Central Regionals, while the Emporia State Hornets made it to the Central Region quarterfinal round but were knocked out of the NCAA tournament with a 74-75 final score against Augustana (S.D.).

Tournament format calls for six games, including three women's and three men's contests to be over three days.

Scouting Montana State-Billings

In 2012-13, the Yellowjackets finished 17-10 overall and placed third in the GNAC regular season, qualifying for the GNAC playoffs where they lost to Seattle Pacific in the quarterfinal round.

MSU-Billings played preseason exhibition games against Division I Montana and Rocky Mountain College. The team lost to Montana, 69-65, before beating Rocky Mountain, 90-58. 

The team was picked to lead the Great Northwest Athletic Conference and returns four starters including Preseason All-American Bobbi Knudsen who averaged 17.8 points and 6.2 assists per game last season. Janiel Olson almost averaged a double-double for the Yellowjackets with 10.2 points and 9.6 rebounds per game. 

Scouting Concordia

IThe Concordia women's basketball team claimed the NSIC regular season title and a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012-13. The team has been picked to win the NSIC for the second conseuctive year and is ranked No. 9 in the WBCA Preseason Poll. 

The Golden Bears returns four starters from the team that finished 23-7 last season. Senior Rachel Hansen leads the team from the point guard position with 10.9 points, 5.3 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game. Carissa Wolynlec was the team's toip three-point shooter, hitting 73 threes and averaging 10.1 ppg. Anika Whiting is the returning NSIC PLayer of the Year after averaging 17.6 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. She also have 31 blocks and 43 steals on the year.

The Golden Bears played two exhibition games, the first a 79-71 overtime win over Wisconsin-Superior, and the second a 68-92 loss to Iowa.

Scouting Indianapolis

The Greyhounds finished the 2012-13 season with a 19-10 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The team lost in the first round of Regionals to eventual national champion Ashland.

Senior Katy McIntosh is a returning All-Midwest Region player. She has scored over 1,000 points in her career and shot .532 from the field last season. The team is a strong shot blocking team, recording 181 blocks shots last season  which ranked second in the nation. 

Scouting Pittsburg State

Pitt State played two tough exhibition games against Division I Sweet 16 teams, Nebraska and Kansas. Despite the losses, the Gorillas were able to get some quality court time and learn what they need to work on as a team.

Lizzy Jeronimus and Antqunita Reed led the Gorillas with 13.0 points and 11.5 points per game, respectively. Reed and Kylie Gafford each averaged 5.0 rebounds per game, while Jeronimus added 4.5 rpg and Alex Muff, 4.0 rpg. Cathy Brugman led the Gorillas in the "extra" stats with two assists, two steals and three blocks. Hadyn Herlocker and Morgan Westhoff each made two threes for the Gorillas.


PSU vs. Opponents

Pittsburg State has only faced one of its three Tipoff Classic opponents. The Gorillas earned a 76-73 win over Indianapolis in Quincy, Ill. on Nov. 23, 1991.

Pitt State in Season Openers

Pitt State is 24-15 in season opening games. The Gorillas are 17-4 in home openers at John Lance Arena and have won each of the last four. The program has a 5-9 record in season openers on the road and 2-2 at neutral sites. The last time the team opened the season at a neutral site was 2011-12. November 8 is the earliest season-opening date for the Gorilla women. For complete information on Pitt State in season-opening games, see the chart on page two.

In the Polls

The USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll came out on Tuesday, October 29. The Gorillas are receiving votes in the poll.  Four PItt State opponents are ranked in the top 25, including three in the top 10, No. 5 Emporia State, No. 8 Central Missouri and No. 9 Concordia-St. Paul. Additionally, Indianapolis, Montana State-Billings, Northeastern State, Quincy, Fort Hays State and Minnesota-Duluth are all receiving votes.
