LCC Partners with Million Meals Kansas

Updated:

POSTED ON BEHALF OF THE LABETTE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Parsons, KS- Labette Community College and the LCC Student Government Association has partnered with Million Meals Kansas to Stop Hunger Now. The partnership will work together to end hunger in our lifetime, which is the mission of Million Meals Kansas.

Labette Community College is one of many colleges and universities in Kansas to take part in the Million Meals challenge of feeding school age children.

The World Bank estimates that more than 1 billion poor and hungry people currently do not have enough to eat each day. At least 900 million people in developing countries alone are hungry. Hardest hit are the children. One child dies every six seconds due to hunger-related causes. These facts are difficult to comprehend since we live in a time of unparalleled wealth and food production capacity.

Students from universities and colleges across Kansas were inspired at the Universities Fighting World Hunger Summit held in Overland Park, Kan. during March 2013. They envision Kansas campuses banding together to do something powerful about hunger and poverty. These student leaders are challenging others across the state to participate in Million Meals Kansas during the 2013-2014 school year. The goal is to collectively package one-million meals that will be distributed through school feeding programs, supporting education initiatives to help break the cycle of poverty.

Stop Hunger Now will serve as meal-packaging partner and advocate. Its program will provide student volunteers a hands-on opportunity to package dehydrated, high protein, and highly nutritious meals on site at each campus. Stop Hunger Now will turnkey the logistics and distribution, and local staff will also help support promotion and fundraising efforts for each school as requested.

Each campus will set its own meal goal and be responsible for its own event and fundraising, but may also choose to partner with another school. The cost of each meal is only $0.25. For less than a bottle of water, you will feed 6 people.

The LCC SGA raised money by having a Penny War among student organizations. Each club or organization placed a decorated collection can in the cafeteria. Students had a friendly competition raising funds as one penny was a positive vote and any other denomination of coin or paper money was a negative point. The organization with the most positive points earned a pizza party. Students enjoyed teasing one another by adding dollar bills to jars. The total amount raised for Million Meals Kansas was $1101. LCC would like to raise $2500, so more volunteers are needed to help raise funds.
