Updated:

Press Release MSSU:

The Missouri Southern football team shut out a team for the first time since 2010 and broke two school records as the Lions defeated Lindenwood-Belleville 55-0 on Senior Day inside of Fred G. Hughes Stadium today.

The Lions (6-3) also secured a winning season with the win. It is the first time since the 1995-97 seasons the Lions have had back-to-back winning seasons. The Lions had eight rushing touchdowns on the day, tying a school record set in 1982 against Evangel. The eight scores on the ground give the Lions 38 on the season, breaking the record of 32 the Lions tied last year. The Lions now have 3,312 yards rushing on the season which breaks the record set last year of 3,043.

LU-Belleville (3-7) had 75 yards on the ground and 51 yards through the air as the Lions' defense limited the Lynx to just 126 yards of total offense.

The Lions scored on all but two possessions in the game, including a drive that ran out the first half and one turnover. Terrance Allen rambled off a 24-yard touchdown run to start the game and JJ Jones picked up the first of two touchdowns on the next possession as he recovered a fumble in the endzone. Jones added a 35-yard run and score with 3:10 left in the first quarter to make the score 20-0, Lions.

Jay McDowell and Chris Barnwell had one-yard rushing touchdowns in the second quarter as the Lions went into the locker room up 27-0.

Ejay Johnson, Anthony Thayer and Anthony Price scored rushing touchdowns in the second half for the Lions.

Southern's defense stood strong in the game, stopping two separate fourth down tries for the Lynx, once with an interception from Demond Horsley at the Lions' 20-yard line and the other time coming at the Lions' 11-yard line.

Johnquavious McBride, Gatlin Ridgway and Anthony Westfield all had seven tackles to lead the Lions. Ridgway had a sack and Westfield had a big stop in the backfield, while Ryon Phillips had five tackles and a sack for a loss of 16 yards. Elijah Swen and Horsley both had interceptions in the game.

The Lions rushed for 552 yards on the ground and eight touchdowns. They averaged 7.7 per rush and eight yards per play on the afternoon, racking up 590 yards of total offense.

Giresse Forchu had 14 carries and 149 yards to lead the rushing attack. Jones had two touchdowns on the ground, while Thayer, Barnwell, Thayer, Allen and Price all had scores of their own. McDowell had a rushing touchdown, while going 2-2 in the air.

The Lions will be back in action next Saturday as Southern finishes off the regular season traveling to Pittsburg to take on Pittsburg State in the Sonic Miners Bowl. Kickoff from Carnie Smith Stadium is slated for 2 pm.
