Junior Morgan Westhoff scored 28 points off the bench on the way to a 76-56 Pitt State (2-2) win over Henderson State (1-1) on Thursday (Nov. 14) in John Lance Arena.
Westhoff hit 10-of-14 shots overall and 5-of-8 from three-point range. She also added three points from the charity stripe. She also had six rebounds, two steals aand an assist. It marked the second consecutive 20-point game for the guard from St. Paul, Kan.
Fellow Junior Lizzy Jeronimus added 14 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Senior Y'Cedrai Devers was active on the boards with eight rebounds. Sophomore Kylie Gafford blocked a career-high six shots. Hailey Roderique contributed a team-high four assists.
Three Henderson State players scored in double figures, led by Krystal Beachum with 17 points. Tiara Davis added 14 and Aungelique Sledge, 11. Dulincia Keener and Ariana Caffery each grabbed eight rebounds.
The first half was close with Pitt State not able to get more than a seven-point lead until a jumper by Westhoff put the Gorillas up by nine, 30-21. A 5-0 run by the Reddies put them back within four, but back-to-back baskets by Jeronimus, including one at the buzzer, gave the Gorillas an eight-point cushion, 34-26, at the half.
Henderson State started the second half outscoring the Gorillas 6-2 to cut the Pitt State lead to three, 36-33. Pitt State answered and a Jeronimus free throw with 15:44 to go gave Pitt State its first double digit lead of the game, 45-35.Â
The Reddies would reduce Pitt State's lead to single digits three more times before a Devers layup with 7:21 to go, 59-48. A free throw by Westhoff with 1:58 remaining put Pitt State ahead by 20, 70-50.
The lead was reduced to 16 two more times, but Pitt State scored the last four points of the game on a layup by Hadyn Herlocker and a jumper by Alex Muff for the final 76-56 score.
Pitt State returns to action on Saturday, November 16 at 10:30 a.m. against Minnesota-Duluth in Rolla, Mo.
