Smallcakes Holds Sweet Fundraiser for Joplin's Shop With A Cop

Updated:

Joplin Police are trying to raise $10,000 dollars for this year's "Shop with a Cop" program, and Smallcakes Cupcakery in Joplin lent a helping hand on Sunday.

Fifty percent of all cupcake sales from 12:00 to 3:30 PM on Sunday went toward the "Shop with a op" program. Not only were the cupcakes going toward a good cause, but kids could even choose to decorate their own cupcakes with sprinkles to brightly colored icing.

Joplin Police say the force puts on the event every year, and with the help of Joplin School's takes 100 underprivileged kids on a $100 dollar shopping spree to Walmart for Christmas gifts.

The children a chosen based on need by the Joplin School's counselor based off of the assisted lunch program. But Joplin Police say the kids don't just shop for themselves, but often for family members and even charities as well.

"These kids are great, I had a young man a couple of years ago that his mom and dad actually accompanied him on the shopping spree, and he spent around $75 dollars, and then his dad was like, 'ok remember our agreement.' And so his last $25 dollars he used to buy toys for the Salvation Army," said Joplin Police Officer Rick Hirshey.

In addition to getting to spend money on toys, Joplin police says it is a chance for area kids to spend time and bond with the Officers. The shopping spree will take place at the 15th street Walmart in Joplin in December.
