Highway 7 temporarily closed near Scammon as officials destroy some old dynamite

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves confirms a portion of Highway 7 near Scammon, Kansas was temporarily closed off Tuesday evening as officials destroyed some old dynamite.  

The Kansas Highway Patrol Explosive Response Team was notified and responded north of Columbus and properly and safely destroyed the items.

There were no explosions or forced evacuations.

Nearby households were notified of the situation and given the opportunity to voluntarily leave the area, if they chose to.
