Southern Serenade’ to observe anniversary of JFK’s death

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY MISSOURI SOUTHERN STATE UNIVERSITY

Southern Serenade’ to observe anniversary of JFK’s death

The 50th anniversary of President Kennedy’s assassination will be observed during “Southern Serenade” at 5 p.m. Friday on KXMS.

President Kennedy had served in the U.S. Navy, and his funeral service included the Navy Band performing John Bacchus Dykes’ “Eternal Father, Strong to Save” (1861), commonly called the “Navy Hymn.” “Southern Serenade” will open with this hymn, performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.

The centerpiece of the hour will be a CBS Masterworks recording from Nov. 13, 1961. It was on that date that cellist Pablo Casals and two colleagues performed at the White House for the Kennedys and their guests. The recording will feature the Mendelssohn Piano Trio No. 1 from that event.

The hour will conclude with “Take Hymn, Earth, for Cherishing,” an English motet on the death of President Kennedy written by composer Herbert Howells.

88.7 KXMS/Fine Arts Radio International is a cultural resource and a community service of Missouri Southern State University.
