Joint Planning Meeting Held to Begin Implementation of Certified Work Ready Community Implementation for Cherokee and Labette Counties, Kan.

Updated:

POSTED ON BEHALF OF THE JOPLIN AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

Joplin, Mo. – A joint Cherokee and Labette County Certified Work Ready Community (CWRC) planning meeting was held this week to form strategy for the implementation of a county-based regionally linked workforce system. The CWRC leadership team is composed of local employers, superintendents/educators, economic development professionals and local government.

By using the National Career Readiness Certificate, the Kansas CWRC pilot counties, Cherokee and Labette, will be able to attract, retain and develop a workforce with the education and foundational skills to succeed in the 21st century.

Trish Carroll, Cherokee County Committee chair, said, "The Certified Work Ready Community program is designed to strengthen our local workforce."

Cherokee and Labette counties were selected as two of 14 nationally to participate in the inaugural county-level program. Prior to the CWRC pilot program only states were accepted to participate in the ACT effort.

Jasper County was the first county in the nation to be certified by ACT in the CWRC program.

The Certified Work Ready Communities Initiative seeks to link workforce development to education, align with the economic development needs of communities, regions and states, and match individuals to jobs based on skill level.

The outcomes are to:

  • Strengthen and grow businesses Foster economic competitiveness
  • Close skill gaps by qualifying our workforce through career readiness certification system.
  • The county committees will meet quarterly or as needed to inform employers of the benefits of participating, gain community support and educate current and future workforce of the skills required for success on the job.
