Icy roads blamed for accident on Spring River Bridge near Baxter Springs; one believed to be in intensive care

At 7:45 a.m. on 11/25/13, Law Enforcement and other Emergency Personnel responded to an accident east of Baxter Springs on U.S. Hwy 166. The accident was attributed to icy road conditions on the Springs River Bridge. The two car accident occurred when a Ford Ranger, driven by Richard Brashers, age 81, lost control of his vehicle on the icy bridge. Brasher's vehicle slid into oncoming traffic, striking another vehicle, then struck a guard rail. Brashers was transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin and is now believed to be in intensive care. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.

This is the first traffic accident responded to by Baxter Springs Emergency Responders due to icy conditions this winter. Baxter Springs Police Chief Mike Kliewer would like to remind all drivers to pay attention to road conditions due to weather changes, especially on bridges and overpasses.
