Thurman Thomas to Enter Texas Sports Hall of Fame

Former Oklahoma State running back Thurman Thomas is oneof eight athletes who will be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame inthe Class of 2014, the organization announced Tuesday.


Thomas played for the Cowboys from 1984-1987 and is theschool's all-time leader in career rushing yards. He ran for 5,001 yards andscored 50 touchdowns over his four-year career. He was Oklahoma State's leadingrusher in each of his four seasons and was the Big Eight leader in both 1985and 1987. He was an All-American and voted the Big Eight Conference's offensiveplayer of the year after both seasons.


In 1985, he rushed for 1,650 yards, good for fourth inAmerica. In 1987, his 1,767 yards were the third-most nationally. His 22 career100-yard rushing games are second in OSU history only to Terry Miller's 26.


A knee injury prevented Thomas from being a first-rounddraft choice, but Buffalo stole him in the second round in 1988. He was thatteam's most effective weapon in four straight Super Bowl seasons, and he wasnamed the NFL's Most Valuable Player after the 1991 season.


He is a 2007 inductee in the Pro Football Hall of Fame,joining his OSU teammate, Barry Sanders. His No. 34 jersey is one of three nolonger in use at Oklahoma State.


Thomas was a 2008 inductee in the National CollegeFootball Hall of Fame.


He is joined in the Class of 2014 by former University ofTexas and Detroit Lions DT Doug English, former UNLV and NBA All Star LarryJohnson, former Texas A&M and NFL OT Charlie Krueger, former Texas A&MLB Dat Nguyen, former Texas Ranger catcher Ivan Rodriguez, NCAA & Olympic400m champion Sanya Richards-Ross and former Baylor and Houston Oilers QB DonTrull.


The inductees are scheduled to appear in Waco, Texas, onFeb. 27, 2014, for a banquet honoring their induction.
