Start the New Year off on the Right Foot: Joplin Family Y’s 5K provides opportunity to keep New Year’s resolution to get in shape!

(Joplin, MO, December, 9, 2013) – The Joplin Family YMCA invites the community to get healthy and fit in the New Year by participating in the 4rd annual Chilly 5K Challenge on January 1, 2013.

The 5K run will begin at 11 am. Participants may preregister at either YMCA location or online at joplinfamilyy.org. Race day registration is available at the Joplin Family YMCA South only. People of all ages and fitness levels are invited to participate in this family-friendly event. Competitive runners will appreciate that the race is a certified course with chip timing, utilizing disposable chips in running bibs. It is anticipated that over 400 people will participate.

Proceeds of this race benefit the Joplin Family YMCA’s Annual Campaign, which ensures YMCA programs and services are open to all people in our community regardless of income. “This event allows us to raise funds to provide services such as safe, supervised childcare and programs that teach good sportsmanship and the values of teamwork to children from low-income families in our community,” said Kim Gray, Fund Development Director. “Many of our runners have grown up at the Y, and are eager to participate in this 5K as a way to give back to the community while enjoying the benefits it provides in terms of healthy living.”

After the race, participants are invited to enjoy chili and refreshments served at Joplin Family YMCA South. Trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female winners, and medals will be given to first through third-place winners in each age category.

This year’s race features a new, out-and-back course that begins and ends at the Joplin Family YMCA South branch. In this 3.1 mile course, runners will head north on St. John’s Blvd, which becomes S. Picher Ave. They will turn right on W. 22nd St and head east. They will then turn right on S. Pearl, and head south until W. 26th St. On W. 26th St., runners will take a right and continue back to St. John’s Blvd., where they will turn left and finish back at the Joplin Family YMCA South branch.

This event is made possible through the generous support of Freeman Health System, Missouri Foundation for Health, Downstream Casino Resort and Missouri Southern State University. Additional support has been provided by Southwest Missouri Bank; the Joplin Globe; Cybex; SNC Squared; Benjamin Rosenberg, DDS; Anne Sharp; Pinnacle Bank; Empire District Electric Company; and the Run Around Running Company.
