Entries accepted for PhotoSpiva national competition

JOPLIN, Mo. - Online entries are being accepted for PhotoSpiva, the prestigious national photography competition and exhibition hosted annually by Spiva Center for the Arts, 222 W. Third St. The deadline for entries is Jan. 5, 2014.

Founded in 1977 and now the longest running photographic competition of its kind in the U.S., PhotoSpiva is considered a snapshot of current issues and practices in contemporary photography. The event not only includes the competition and exhibition, but also a juror’s lecture and private photographer portfolio reviews. PhotoSpiva 2014 will run from March 8 through May 4, 2014.

Any amateur or professional photographer in the U.S. or its territories may enter the competition. Submissions must be made online at www.photospiva.org. People who do not have the computer capabilities to enter online may contact Spiva for assistance in doing so. Work derived from any photographic process – traditional, digital, or photo-based mixed media – is eligible as long as the work is original and has never been exhibited at Spiva. Fee is $40 to enter five photos and $10 for each additional photo. Three-dimensional entries are not eligible.

Photographers will be notified of whether their entries were accepted for the exhibition by Jan. 27, 2014. Selected images must be delivered to Spiva by Feb. 21, 2014.

Juror for PhotoSpiva 2014 is Dorith Doherty, professor of photography, University of North Texas, Denton. She will select the images for the exhibition from entries submitted online, then she will travel to Joplin to determine the award winners and present cash awards on March 14, 2014. That same day, she will present the juror's lecture and conduct portfolio reviews.

PhotoSpiva 2014 is sponsored by Freeman Health System with additional financial support from the Joplin Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Missouri Arts Council, a state agency.
