NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE OFFICE OF U.S. SENATOR ROY BLUNT (MO.)

Senator Blunt Co-Sponsors Resolution To Protect Missourians’ Military Retirement Pay

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Roy Blunt (Mo.), co-sponsored a “sense of the Senate” resolution to address the disproportionate military pay provision in the budget that would reduce the cost-of-living (COLA) adjustment for military retirees under the age of 62.

The resolution, which was introduced today by U.S. Senator Saxby Chambliss (Ga.), states that retirees from the Armed Forces should not unfairly bear the burden of excessive government spending, and the Senate should seek alternatives to the current military retirement provisions in the budget legislation currently being considered. With this resolution, the Senate agrees to address the reduction of military retirement pension before it goes into effect in December of 2015.

“I’m voting against final passage of the budget today, in part because it hurts the brave servicemen and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting America,” said Blunt, who is one of three U.S. Senators to serve on the defense authorizing and appropriating committees. “So many active duty and retired military men and women in Missouri have made sacrifices to serve our country, and we owe it to them – as well as their families – to keep our promise.”

The legislation is also co-sponsored by U.S. Senators Johnny Isakson (Ga.), Lisa Murkowski (Alaska), John McCain (Ariz.), John Hoeven (N.D.), Ron Johnson (Wis.), Susan Collins (Maine), and Rob Portman (Ohio).
