13 year old Miami girl struck by car and killed

Updated December 19, 2013 at 2:15 PM by Liz Holliday:  The family of Austina Barton tells us a funeral fund has been set up for the 13 year old.

If you wish to donate, visit any Arvest Bank Branch and donate to the "Austina Barton Funeral Fund".  It will be given to the family for arrangements.

 

Updated December 19, 2013 at 11:50 AM by Liz Holliday:  Family members of Austina Barton have released a photo of the 13 year old struck by a vehicle on Wednesday on North Main Street in Miami, Oklahoma.

Family members say she was crossing the street and walking to Walmart with her younger cousin to buy Christmas presents.

The 13 year old was killed as a result.  Her younger cousin was unharmed in the incident.

Updated December 19, 2013 at 10:30 AM by Liz Holliday:  Miami Police confirm that the 13 year old killed while crossing North Main Street Wednesday night was Austina Barton.

She attended Will Rogers Middle School in Miami.

The Superintendent of Miami Public Schools, Loretta Robinson, released the following statement:

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic accident resulting in the loss of one of our students.  Our heart goes out to her family, friends, and classmates. It is a difficult time for everyone who knew her and loved her.

Grief counselors were brought in this morning. Procedures and referral information are in place to help meet needs that may arise for our students and staff."

 

Posted December 18, 2013 at 9:19 PM:  On Wednesday, shortly after 6:00 PM, Miami Police Department responded to an auto/pedestrian accident in the 2300 block of North Main Street.  Upon arrival, it was determined that a young girl had been crossing North Main Street and was struck by a vehicle heading North on North Main Street. 

The child was transported to Baptist Integris Hospital.  The 13 year old victim was sadly pronounced dead at shortly after 7:00 PM. 

Officers with the Miami Police Department are on scene and further investigation into the cause of the accident are currently ongoing.
