Search Called Off for Missing Carthage Man

Updated:

A search effort in Anderson was called off after a missing Carthage man contacted his family early this morning.

Stephen A. Bergen, 51, had been reported missing since Friday afternoon. According to his wife, Della Bergen, he was visiting his grandmother's property when he apparently got lost in the woods. Early this morning he made his way out of the wilderness to his uncle's house in McDonald County.

Bergen's son, Joshua Bergen, confirmed his father was taken to the hospital to be treated for dehydration and some scrapes and bruises. He is in stable condition.

Bergen is former pastor and a self-employed painter. According to his Facebook page, he is also a case manager and volunteer coordinator for Samaritan's purse, a group assisting with the May 22 tornado.
