City Warns Residents to Prep for Winter Storm and Freezing Temps

Updated:

Joplin City officials warn of dangerous weather

Press Release

With theforecast listing frigid temperatures, below zero wind chill effects and winterprecipitation for the upcoming week, there are several precautions citizens cantake in preparation for this bitter cold spell. One of the primary concerns isthe winter weather's ability to knock out heat, power and communicationsservices to your home or office, sometimes for days at a time. Heavy snowfalland extreme cold can immobilize an entire region.

TheNational Weather Service refers to winter storms as the "Deceptive Killers"because most deaths are indirectly related to the storm. Instead, people die intraffic accidents on icy roads and of hypothermia from prolonged exposure tocold. It is important to be prepared for winter weather before it strikes.

Beforewinter storms approach, prepare yourself and add the following supplies to yourhome's emergency kit:

  • Rock salt or more environmentally safeproducts to melt ice on walkways. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency fora complete list of recommended products.
  • Sand to improve traction.
  • Snow shovels and other snow removalequipment.
  • Sufficient heating fuel. You may becomeisolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a goodsupply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove.
  • Adequate clothing and blankets to keepyou warm.

Otherpreparations to consider before getting caught off guard by Mother Nature:

  • Makea Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disasterstrikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how youwill get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.
  • Ifusing a portable generator, DO NOT bring it inside of your home or garage dueto carbon monoxide poisoning risks. Keep the generator outside.
  • Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or otherlocal news channels for critical information from the National Weather Service(NWS). Be alert to changing weather conditions.
  • Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle.
  • Bring pets/companion animals insideduring winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas withnon-frozen drinking water.
  • Keep extra batteries in stock, as wellas bottled water and food items that do not require much preparation.
