Dangerous Weather Hits Four States

Updated:

Dangerously cold temperatures are taking hold of the four state area.

Emergency management officials say police did a sweep of homeless camps to alert those without shelter that they can go to Watered Gardens or Souls Harbor.

Those shelters will have occupancy limits waived during the extreme cold unless numbers are so great as to pose a fire danger.

Keith Stammer, Joplin/Jasper county emergency management director says if there are a great number  requests for shelter after those places are full, the city will consider opening an emergency shelter.  The Red Cross indicates it is prepared to open a shelter if necessary.

Officials advise people to avoid travel at all costs.  Blowing snow has left some stuck and with the area under a wind child warning, it is extremely dangerous to be exposed to the cold which can lead to frostbite.

Many events, churches and schools have already canceled sessions for Monday.
