Snow Day Provides More Time For New Baxter Springs Middle School

Updated:

A snow day for some means sledding or making it through the whole day without stepping out into the cold. But for faculty and staff at the new Baxter Springs Middle School, it meant an extra day to make sure boxes are unpacked and all the pictures are hung just right.

"Mother nature plays good tricks on us and dirty tricks on us sometimes, and we're actually pretty thankful for the extra time," said Baxter Springs Middle School Counselor Lori Kellum.

Tuesday was supposed to be the first day for students at the new school facility, over a year in the making thanks to a 2012 bond. But the cold had other plans. And as Kellum explains it, anyone who has experience moving knows you can always use extra time.

"oh no, there is not enough time..and a building of this size, it's really difficult to get it all where you need it to be," Kellum said.

Something the school's secretary Nichole Conner knows all too well. She's spent her snow day unpacking supplies and putting up teacher mail boxes.

"I knew there were still some last minute things that we hadn't gotten finished yet so this is a good opportunity to come in and wrap up a few loose ends," Conner said.

And according to the Principal at Baxter Springs Middle School everyone was so excited to start at the new facility, but he says the safety of students has to come first.

"Yeah it was a little disappointing, but we'll make due, and a couple of days from now, no one will think twice about it and we'll be back to business as usual," said Principal Jason Walker.

And business as usual will come on Wednesday morning, when thanks to the extra day, teachers and staff will be that much more ready when students starting walking down the hallways.

"The first day is the first day," Walker said.

And Walker added that by the time the school bell rings, everyone will be back in the groove and ready to go.

In addition to breaking in the new facility tomorrow morning, they will also hold a ceremony at its old facility at 9:30AM  to say goodbye one last time.
