City of Joplin reopens limb drop-off area for citizens, updates public on other related services

Updated:

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED JANUARY 14, 2014 BY THE CITY OF JOPLIN

Although the City has implemented several yard debris management programs in the past few months, Mother Nature seems to have a schedule of her own. It is the City’s goal to assist citizens with the removal of leaves and damaged limbs, while also keeping main arterial and collector streets cleared during winter weather conditions. Due to the varied weather elements experienced this past month, the City’s Public Works crews have alternated equipment on their trucks to best meet these objectives in accordance with Mother Nature. The City appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation in utilizing these services.

The following is an update of the various programs.

Curbside pickup of ice storm damage tree limbs has begun. The program had to be delayed due to the winter blast last week, but City crews are now actively proceeding through the City to remove the piles for residents. Residents do NOT need to call the City for pick up service.

Drop-off site reopens this weekend. To help expedite the cleanup, the City will also reopen the limb drop off site in northwest Joplin, providing another option for residents to have their limbs removed. The drop off site , located at 1702 North Schifferdecker Avenue, will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, January 16 and 17; and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, January 18. Residents can also bring their live Christmas trees to that site as well during those times. The drop-off site is located six tenths of a mile north of Belle Center Road on the west side of Schifferdecker Avenue. This free drop off service is for Joplin residents only. Professional contractors will not be allowed to dump.

Christmas tree drop-off sites are open until Friday, January 31 at Humphreys Park, McClelland Park and the Public Works Center, 1301 West 2nd Street. Please be sure to remove all decorations from the trees before leaving them at these locations. Signs will direct residents to the drop-off area.

City’s leaf pick up program is temporarily suspended, although the City plans to resume this program following limb pick up, as weather permits. Please watch for announcements from the City regarding the leaf pick-up program.

For more information, call Lynden Lawson, Assistant Public Works Director of Operations at 417-624-0820 Ext. 560, or the Public Works Center at 417-624-0820 Ext. 564.
