Joplin home fire ruled incendiary in nature

An unoccupied Joplin home is ruined by a fire early this morning.

Crews arrived at 1906 West Fourth Street shortly after 2 AM, finding light smoke coming from the roof.  Officials say the fire was quickly put out, and only garbage was found inside.  There were no utilities hooked up, and so firefighters believe some homeless may have been inside.

"It was a house that was apparently abandoned, there was no electricity, there was no gas hook up.  And yet there was a fire in one room.  You have to assume that somebody was in there," says Joplin Emergency Manager Keith Stammer.

Firefighters say the cause of the fire is incendiary in nature, meaning it was set on purpose but is not arson.  No one was injured.
