Red Cross honors Pittsburg blood donors during National Blood Donor Month

Blood donations help patients locally and nationally

Pittsburg, Kan. Jan 13, 2014 — Since 1970, January has been designated as National Blood Donor Month. This year, the American Red Cross thanks all blood donors for helping to ensure a stable blood supply for patients in need both locally and across the country.

“Every year in the U.S., nearly 5 million patients need blood transfusions,” said Terri Dunaway, CEO of the Red Cross Central Plains Blood Services Region. “Thanks to dedicated volunteer blood donors, the Red Cross can help meet those needs.”

The blood supply is particularly vulnerable during winter months due to inclement weather, seasonal illnesses and busy holiday schedules. Appointments to give blood and help patients in need can be made at redcrossblood.org or 1-800-RED CROSS.

Upcoming blood donation opportunities:

Pittsburg Community Blood Drive
Tuesday, January 21, 1:00 pm to 6:30 pm
Wednesday, January 22, 8:30 am to 2:00 pm
Countryside Christian Church, 1901 E. 4th

How to donate blood

Simply call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements.
