K-State To Celebrate 50th Anniversary of 1964 Final Four

Kansas State will honor one of its greatest men's basketballteams on Saturday, as 14 members of the 1964 Final Four will celebrate the 50thanniversary of its accomplishment at its annual Legends Weekend at BramlageColiseum.

 

The members of the 1964 Final Four team will be honored athalftime of Saturday's game with West Virginia. Among the 14 members returningto Manhattan for the event include Dick Barnard, Larry Berger, BillGettler, Joe Gottfrid, Tom Haas, Jim Hoffmann, MaxMoss, John Olson, Lou Poma, Sammy Robinson, JeffSimons, Roger Suttner, Larry Weigel and College Basketballand Naismith Hall of Fame head coach Tex Winter.

 

The recognition will be a part of the annual LegendsWeekend, which kicks off with a reception in the Basketball Training Facilityon Friday evening for all former Wildcat lettermen. There will be a breakfaston Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. to honor the 1964 team at the West StadiumCenter prior to the men's basketball game, which tips at 12:30 p.m.

 

Led by All-American Willie Murrell, Kansas State wonboth the Big Eight Holiday Tournament title as well as the Big Eightregular-season title en route to its fourth trip to the Final Four in 1964 witha 22-7 overall record. The Wildcats won 13 consecutive games, including theMidwest Regional Championship with victories over Texas-El Paso and WichitaState, before falling to top-ranked UCLA, 90-82, national semifinals inMunicipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

 

The current Wildcats (13-4, 3-1 Big 12), winners of 11 ofthe last 12 games, will conclude their brief two-game homestand with a match-upagainst former coach Bob Huggins and his Mountaineers (10-7, 2-2 Big 12)at 12:30 p.m. CT on the Big 12 Network.
