Gorilla Women Fall at Washburn

TOPEKA, Kan. - Despite the best three-point shooting night of the season, the Gorillas fell, 70-60, to Washburn on Saturday evening in Lee Arena. 

Pitt State made 10 threes on the night, including six from Alexa Bordewick, a career high for the senior from Topeka. Cathy Brugman made three threes, while Morgan Westhoff addded one. The team was 10-for-22 overall from long range in the game. 

Bordewick led all scorers with 21 points. Brugman added 16. Brugman led the Gorillas with six rebounds. Kylie Gafford contributed three blocked shots.

Each team had big runs in the first half. Pitt State held the Ichabods scoreless from 10:23 to 5:49, while on a 9-0 run to go up 21-15. After the two teams traded baskets, the Ichabods went on a 10-0 run in the last 4:17 of the first half to take a 29-23 lead at the half.

Pitt State never quite recovered in the second half. The Ichabods got their first double-digit lead of the game at 39-29 with 16:16 to go in the game. PItt State was able to cut the lead to as few as eight, but the Gorillas were bot able to get closer. 

The Gorillas outrebounded the Ichabods, 24-18 in the first half, but were only able to grab 14 rebounds in the second half, compared to 24 for the home team. Washburn was also helped by free throw shooting, as it was 26-of-37 from the line, compared to just 4-of-13 for the Gorillas. 

Pitt State falls to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in MIAA play. Washburn improves to 10-5 overall and 5-3 in the league.

After two tough games on the road, Pitt State returns to the friendly confines of John Lance Arena for three straight games beginning with a 5:30 p.m. tipoff against Nebraska-Kearney on Wednesday (Jan. 22).
