1,200 students paint to complete a mural

Updated:

1,200 third grade students from the Joplin area will visit the Spiva Arts Center in January and February.

Each student will put their creative touch on a 16 ft. canvas mural. The art center calls it the collaborative project, paint by number. Children pick a color with a corresponding number and fill in the area with color.

Organizers say this is a unique experience.

"We have enlarged a few of the paintings from Roy Kerswill's the Oregon trail paintings. So they will be uniquely third grade painted murals," said Spiva Art Center Educational Instructor Caralee McDonald.

The mural is expected to be completed by February 23rd.
