Chetopa Expands Water System Improvement Goal

Updated:

One plan may often lead to another. Such is the case with the city of Chetopa's water system improvement project.

Earlier this month, city officials approved a change order close to $200,000 to fix new water lines, the condition of which were deemed unsatisfactory.

"Originally when we bid the project, we had some lines that weren't that old, so we thought we could leave them in there," said Mayor Ron Wood. "And then we were going to put new meters to the old line. When we started digging up the line we found out it wasn't as good as we thought it was."

"Over the years the lime and calcium gets built up and the rust and it just eventually gets to where it's not much of a water flow," said Jason Dugan, utilities leadsman.

The line update is part of a complete water system overhaul that began in 2011. According to city clerk Toni Cumrine, Chetopa received funding from a community development block grant award for the project.

The initial intention was to upgrade most of the fire hydrants and water meters. While the new goal of fixing the pipes may be added work, it is not an added cost.

"We're still under budget," said Mayor Wood. "It's still falling within the realm of the monies of which we started with."

According to Chetopa officials, the pipe line replacements will make a noticeable difference in the water pressure and quality. A detail for which local resident Kim Pease is eager.

"I'm looking for it to taste great. We love good water."
