Rebounding Key in Women's Win Over Fort Hays State

Pittsburg - The Pittsburg State women's basketball team outrebounded Fort Hays State by 17 to help the Gorillas to a 74-60 win over the Tigers on Saturday (Jan. 25) afternoon at John Lance Arena.

The Tigers had averaged nine rebounds a game more than their opponents this season, while the Gorillas had less than a plus-one rebounding margin. Pitt State was tenacious on the boards, pulling down 52 a season-high 52 rebounds, including 14 off the offensive glass. Y'Cedria Devers led the Gorillas with 10 rebounds, six of them offensive.

The Gorilla scoring effort was fairly even for the game, led by Lizzy Jeronimus with 16. Alexa Bordewick added 10 points. Alex Muff was just short of a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds. Cathy Brugman also scored nine points. Kylie Gafford contributed seven points and sic rebounds.

The game was very even in the first half, with two lead changes and eight ties. Neither team made a three in the opening period of play. Pitt State held a five-point lead, 39-34, at the half.

There were four more ties in the early minutes of the second half before a 14-2 run by the Gorillas gave them a 12-point lead, 59-47, with 7:37 to go.

Late in the half, the Gorillas were able to build up their rebounding margin with an offensive possession lasting more than two minutes that saw the team grab five offensive rebounds. 

Pitt State earned its largest led of the game, 16-points, on a free throw by Brigit Hesser with 1:42 to go. 

Fort Hays State was led by Kate Lehman with 17 points. Katelyn Edwards added 13.

The Gorillas will play the last game of their three-game home stand on Wednesday (Jan. 29) night against Northeastern State. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
