Winds fuel fires in Carl Junction

Carl Junction fire crews last night were busy responding to multiple fires.

As of midnight, the Carl Junction Fire Dept. said crews had responded to 10 grass fires.

Firefighters say wind played a role in those fires.

Power lines dropped sparks -- starting a grass fire near Highway 171 and Pennell Street -- which burned for nearly a quarter mile.

The fire did spread to some railroad ties.

No structures were damaged.

"Once the first unit got on scene, it was approaching an outbuilding, a pretty decent-sized shed, and it was about five feet from some homes. We were able to put a stop on it, make a defensive stop around all the homes," Joe Perkins, with the Carl Junction Fire Dept., said.

The fire risk is high with wind advisories for all parts of the KOAM viewing area.
