Mercy Health to eliminate 12 positions in Fort Scott and 17 in Independence

Updated:

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY MERCY HOSPITAL INDEPENDENCE

Mercy in Fort Scott and Independence have been working diligently for the past several years to manage the impact of declining patient volumes and reimbursement and regulatory challenges. In addressing these challenges, we have implemented a variety of cost savings and revenue generating initiatives, including closing positions through attrition as co-workers have voluntarily left both organizations.

Despite these many efforts and in the face of continuing, severe financial challenges, we find it necessary today to further reduce our workforce through the elimination of 12 positions in Fort Scott and 17 in Independence. The reductions include positions within both hospitals and Mercy Clinic. While we are disheartened to take this action, we believe that we have fully considered all other options and have no other viable solutions.

Co-workers whose positions have been eliminated will be treated with the utmost compassion and respect. The names of the co-workers will not be released out of respect for their privacy.

All impacted co-workers will have the opportunity to apply for open positions for which they may be qualified elsewhere within Mercy. Co-workers who are unable to find another position within Mercy will receive a severance package including compensation and benefits for a period of time, based on their position and length of service. Outplacement services will be provided in order to help bridge their career path to new employment. Employee Assistance services will be available as well.

We take this difficult step as a means to sustain Mercy’s health care ministry in southeast Kansas and to enable us to continue to serve our communities. We do not expect another reduction of our Kansas workforce in the foreseeable future. We appreciate the community’s consideration and concern for our co-workers as these changes take place.
