City encourages residents to do reference checks when paying for repairs

PARSONS, KS --- The City of Parsons Inspection and Codes Enforcement Office is recommending that residents who are paying contractors to make repairs and home improvements to check the registered list of licensed companies before signing contracts.

Residents should be aware that the following types of work including any plumbing, electrical, or heat & air (HVAC), are required to be performed by licensed companies or individuals. The City maintains and active list of licensed contractors, updated quarterly on the web under the Community Development Department on the web at www.parsonsks.com.

Many individuals within the city have utilized services from this company and risk having to remove and replace work that is not completed according to current city codes. “This is a real issue for residents,” said Rick Hizey, Parsons City Inspector/Code Enforcement. “Many residents are shocked to find out the company they chose to do their repairs is not licensed.”

The licensing process is designed to help protect residents and provide a sense of security in the selection of contractors. The City of Parsons requires all heat and air, plumbing and electrical contractors to annually renew their license which includes providing proof of successful Pro-Metrics Testing completion and a current copy of at least $300,000 in general liability insurance.

“Residents who choose to ignore the licensure requirements are not only putting themselves and their property at risk, they can be subject to Municipal Court fines, removal of work that has been completed,” Albertini added. “Contractors who ignore our requirements face stiffer penalties.”

To find the most up-to-date list of Licensed Contractors in the City of Parsons, call 421-7054 or go online to www.parsonsks.com under the community development link.
