Soaring Heights School officially opens

Updated:

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon helped officially open Soaring Heights Elementary School today in Duquesne.

It's only the third ribbon cutting since 1985 for a new Joplin School District Building.

Students say they feel safe, can learn, and have fun in the new building.  One student in particular says the new building doesn't feel like a school building, but a place of happiness.

Governor Nixon says today is the start of a new journey for Soaring Heights students.

"We're going to have to be internationally competitive in our schools.  We're going to need to continue to raise our game.  The world is moving forward, too, and the economy of the future is a worldwide economy.  We need to continue to challenge ourselves and challenge these kids to continue to improve," says Governor Nixon.

Part of today's festivities also includes students singing to "To Everything There Is A Season" by the late Pete Seeger.
