Gorillas Snap Streak With 73-63 Win Over RiverHawks

Devon Branch scored a game-high 23 points to help Pittsburg State University snap a four-game losing streak with a 73-63 victory over Northeastern State University Wednesday (Jan. 29).


The Gorillas (7-10, 3-7 MIAA) built a 42-32 halftime advantage against the RiverHawks (11-8, 6-6 MIAA) and held off an NSU comeback bid in the second half for the win.

The RiverHawks slowly whittled away at the Gorillas lead in the second half, closing to within three points, 56-53, on Dalen Qualls' 3-pointer with 7:26 to go.

Pitt State countered with a 9-2 run to push its lead by to 10, 65-55, with 2:22 to go. The Gorillas made nine of 10 free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Jake Bullard added 16 points for the Gorillas, while Conner Kjer just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Trevor Gregory also contributed nine points and eight rebounds for the Gorillas.

Bryton Hobbs scored a team-leading 18 points for the RIverHawks, including 12 in the second half. Qualls added 16 points, while Curtis Evans finished with 15.

The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Feb. 1) when they travel to Edmond, Okla., to face the University of Central Oklahoma at 3:30 p.m. (CST).
