Locals take the plunge in Joplin for charity

Updated:

The frigid temperatures did not stop many brave folk from jumping into a creek. Dozens of locals gathered to take part in the 2014 Missouri Polar Plunge to raise money for the Missouri Special Olympics.

Held at Shoal Creek at Zan's Campground in Joplin, the event is hosted by the Joplin and Carthage Police Departments. Dedicated plungers, ages 10 and up, posed for pictures and jumped into the cold creek. Officials said the estimated temperature of the water was in the mid-40's. One local expressed his strategy for warming up.

"Hot cocoa!" said MSSU student Julian Young.
