Southern women drop hard-fought contest at #12 Central Missouri 70-61

Warrensburg, Mo. - Despite a double-double from senior forward Dominique Mosley, the Missouri Southern Lions women's basketball team was unable to overcome the powerful duo of Keuna Flax and BreAnna Lewis as they fell 70-61 this afternoon to the #12 Central Missouri Jennies at the UCM Multipurpose Building.

Mosley went 7-of-12 from the field, while hitting 8-of-10 from the free-throw line on the afternoon. She added 11 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season. In addition to Mosley's great outing, Southern (14-5, 8-4 MIAA) also had Tee Singleton tie a career-high with 13 points to go along with six boards and Shonte Clay chipped in nine points and four boards. The Lions shot 20-of-47 (.426) from the field while hitting 18-of-25 (.720) from the free-throw line

Central Missouri (16-3, 10-2) was led by the high scoring pair of Flax and Lewis, who finished with 27 and 22 points, respectively. Revonnia Howard added 11 rebounds while Lewis chipped in nine boards. The Jennies shot nearly identical to the Lions as they went 25-of-59 (.424) from the field while hitting 14-of-18 from the charity stripe.

With Central Missouri jumping out to a 8-2 run, Southern responded with a 9-6 run to pull within 14-11 six minutes into the game. The Jennies scored ten straight points to build a 24-11 lead, before a Singleton jumper and a pair of free throws from Mosley ended the run. UCM kept at least an eight-point edge for the remainder of the half as layup from Kristen Hanna closed the half as the Jennies took a 40-29 lead into the halftime break.

Looking to get off to a strong start in the second half, Singleton scored the first five points for Southern and along with layups from Sharese Jones and Mosley cut Central's lead to six (44-38) in the first four minutes of play. After a layup from Jones cut the lead to four with 12:28 to play, Central all but ended Southern's threat answering with a 9-0 run over the next 5:19 before Southern finally got back on the board as Clay hit a free-throw.

Southern was unable to get any closer than seven the remainder of the game as they won by a final of 70-61. The Lions had nine assists on the afternoon, while the bench outscored UCM's 37-13. The Lions are off this week before resuming action next Saturday at home when they play a rematch against the Jennies at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center at 1 p.m.
