First-half deficit too much in 75-62 loss at Central Missouri

Warrensburg, Mo. - The Missouri Southern men's basketball team shot a season-low nine percent from the three point line and couldn't overcome a first-half deficit in a 75-62 loss at Central Missouri today inside the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg.

Southern (15-4, 9-3 MIAA) was led in scoring by Marquis Addison as the senior scored 18 points, including going 8-10 from the free-throw line. The 18 points moved him into eighth place all-time in scoring at Missouri Southern, passing Matt Olson (95-99). Addison currently has 1,421 points in his career at MSSU. Greg Renfroe scored nine points and added five rebounds, while Jordan Talbert, Cameron Cornelius andLane Barlow had eight points each.

Central (17-4, 9-3 MIAA) had three score in double-figures led by 23 points from Daylen Robinson on 9-17 shooting from the field and 5-8 from the free-throw line. Dillon Deck scored 15 and Kyle Wolf added 12.

A jumper from Addison at the 15:12 mark of the first-half tied the score at six, but the Mules went on a 12-3 run and led 14-9 after a free-throw from Charles Hammork. The UCM lead was nine (20-11) after a layup from Deck with just under eight minutes to go, but the Lions cut the lead to three (27-24) after a jumper from Renfroe with 2:42 to go in the half. The Mules went on a 10-4 run to end the half and led 37-28 going into the locker room.

The Mules pushed their lead to 14 (42-28) after a three from Jon Gilliam with 19:09 left in the game. The lead was 15 (55-40) after a layup from Preston Brunz with 12:08 left, and the Lions would cut it to nine twice, but wouldn't get any closer.

Southern shot 43 percent from the field and 77 percent from the free-throw line, but hit just 1-of-11 from long-range today. The Lions forced eight turnovers and scored 16 points off the miscues.

Southern will have a week off before facing off with this very same Central Missouri team next Saturday. Tip off from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center is slated for 3 pm.
