Governor Thanks MoDOT for Snow Fighting Efforts

SPRINGFIELD, MO – For Missouri Department of Transportation employees, the hours spent plowing and treating roadways during winter storms is just part of the job. They work nights, weekends and holidays to fulfill MoDOT’s commitment and to make sure state highways are plowed and treated so Missourians can keep moving forward.

That commitment was recognized today by Missouri Governor Jay Nixon, who thanked employees for their hard work and dedication.

Governor Nixon toured the Springfield maintenance facility and spoke with MoDOT employees about their work during this weekend’s storm. He also recognized the work of the Missouri State Highway Patrol and the well-established coordination between the two agencies.

“With another storm system on the way, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank the hard-working Missourians of MoDOT and the Highway Patrol for the outstanding work they’ve already done this winter and get an update on their preparations for what is still ahead,” Gov. Nixon said.

This last weekend, MoDOT crews spent about 147,000 man hours fighting snow and used over 16,000 tons of salt. With another round of snow and ice in the forecast for Tuesday, the department will be out in full force once again, working around the clock, treating and clearing state highways.

“MoDOT’s success doesn’t happen without the help of our partners,” said MoDOT Director Dave Nichols. “We work closely with the Missouri State Highway Patrol during winter storms and we are grateful for that collaboration. Ultimately it means we are keeping more Missourians safe.”

During winter events, the Missouri Department of Transportation focuses on efficiently managing resources, providing helpful and accurate information to the public and making Missouri’s state highways passable as soon as possible after each storm. During an average winter season, MoDOT spends approximately $42 million on snow-fighting efforts.
