Gorilla Women Add Win Over Bearcats

Updated:

Press Release PSU:

Three Gorillas scored in double figures as the Pitt State women's basketball team earned a 73-58 win over Southwest Baptist on Tuesday (February 4) evening in John Lance Arena.

Lizzy Jeronimus led the Gorillas with 17 points. Antqunita Reed came off the bench to add 15, 13 of which she scored in the second half, and Cathy Brugman chipped in 12. Y'Cedria Devers was just under double figures with nine, as was Hailey Roderique who scored eight off the bench. The Gorillas shot .458 overall and .400 from three-point range. Roderique made two of the team's six threes in the game.

The Gorillas had a strong defensive game, as they held the Bearcats to .338 overall and just .286 from long range. Pitt State also blocked 11 shots, seven by Kylie Gafford, just one fewer than the school record. Jeronimus also added three blocked shots.

SBU did get the better of the Gorillas on the boards, outrebounding the home team by three, 41-38, including 18 offensive boards. Pitt State was led by Gafford with seven rebounds. Brugman added five. Jeronimus, Reed and Roderique each grabbed four rebounds.

There were four ties and five lead changes in the first eight minutes of the game, but back-to-back threes by Brugman and Brigit Hesser with just over 12 minutes remaining in the first half gave the Gorillas the lead for good. A jumper by Jeronimus with 5:31 in the first half gave Pitt State its first double digit lead of the game, 27-16. A 7-0 run by the Bearcats cut Pitt State's lead to four with 2:21 left in the half, but the Gorillas built the double digit lead again to lead 34-23 at the half.

After Southwest Baptist cut the Pitt State lead to seven, 40-33, early in the second half, the Gorillas came back and continued to build a stronger lead. Reed went on a little 8-0 run of her own from 13:59 to 11:32, showing her athleticism. A three-point play by Brugman with 7:21 left gave PSU its largest lead of the game, 21 points, 63-42.

Southwest Baptist was led by Jaqui Zelenka who put together a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

Pitt State will play its last home game until the last day of February on Saturday as the team takes on Central Oklahoma at 1:30 p.m.
