NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE AREA AGENCY ON AGING

Volunteers needed for programs to benefit senior citizens

Joplin, MO – Two programs that serve area senior citizens are in need of volunteers to help keep their programs going.

The Missouri Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is needing volunteers to be advocates for residents of area facilities. Ombudsmen assist residents in resolving conflict within the facility. Most of the time an ombudsman is a friendly face and it’s amazing how just a few minutes will brighten up a resident’s day. Volunteering for our residents of nursing homes is one of the most rewarding jobs one could have. Training is provided and support is always available. For more information, please call Connie Payne at the Council of Churches at 417-862-3598.

Volunteers are also currently needed to assist area homebound seniors with grocery shopping, medical transportation and safety repairs on their homes. These individuals are over the age of 60 and have no family in the area, and are often too frail to access assistance available in the community. If you're interested, please contact Vivian at Homebound Services, 417-624-3577.

The Area Agency on Aging Region Ten has been serving the senior population of Barton, Jasper, Newton, and McDonald counties since 1979. The Agency is a non-profit, charitable organization with a 501(c)(3) designation. Region Ten’s purpose is to provide services, programs, and information that will assist older persons in maintaining independence and dignity in their lives. Services through this agency are available to persons 60 years of age or older who live in our service area. Priority is given to those individuals with the greatest economic and social need. Information and family caregiver services are provided to people of all ages.
