NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE OZARKS

CHILDREN’S HAVEN OF SOUTHWEST MISSOURI RECEIVES A COOVER REGIONAL GRANT

The Community Foundation of the Ozarks, in partnership with Commerce Trust Company, awarded $10,376 to the Children’s Haven of Southwest Missouri at the 2014 Coover Regional Grants ceremony in Springfield.

The funding will be used to provide 120 nights of shelter to homeless teens in the Joplin area. The youths aged 13-17 are provided with safe, nurturing shelter, transportation to and from home schools, medical appointments, employment and/or employment opportunities, and nutritious meals and snacks. In 2013, Children’s Haven provided approximately 298 nights of safe, nurturing care to youth.

The Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Regional Grantmaking Program awarded the grant at a ceremony on Feb. 6 at the Commerce Trust Company in Springfield.

The Children’s Haven grant was among 20 proposals selected for a total of $200,000 in awards from among $904,299 in requests. The grant criteria expanded for this year beyond a recent focus on poverty-related needs. The 2014 grant awards are being awarded to agencies working on poverty, health, environmental, and arts issues.

These grants are made possible through the generosity of the late Julia Dorothy Coover, who worked for Commerce Bank for 30 years. She established the Louis L. and Julia Dorothy Coover Charitable Foundation in 1992 to honor her husband’s memory. With this year’s awards, the Coover Charitable Foundation surpasses $3.8 million in grantmaking across the Ozarks since its founding.

The Community Foundation of the Ozarks has a network of 44 affiliate foundations, including the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri, Inc., serving the Joplin area.
