Women's Basketball Pulls Out Big 71-67 Road Win

Updated:

HAYS, KS - Lizzy Jeronimus scored the go-ahead basket with 44 seconds to play as Pittsburg State University pull out a big 71-67 road win over Fort Hays State University Saturday (Feb. 15) at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Gorillas (19-6, 12-3 MIAA) remained a game out of first place in the MIAA standings while winning their eighth straight game. The Tigers dropped to 16-6 overall and 9-6 in the MIAA.

Jeronimus scored a team-leading 17 points for Pitt State, while Cathy Brugman added 14 points. Kylie Gafford and Alex Muff both chipped in with eight points.

Pitt State led by as many as nine points in the first half, after overcoming a 1-for-10 shooting slump to start the game. The Gorillas never trailed in the second half until Keriann Shaw made two free throws to put the Tigers in front, 66-65, with 1:39 to play in the contest.

Brugman missed a 3-pointer with 1:19 to go, but FHSU was unable to expand its lead when Gafford blocked Tera Ingalsbe's shot with 1:00 remaining.

Brugman rebounded the missed shot, and after a Pitt State timeout, Jeronimus drove to the basket for the go-ahead score.

Katelyn Edwards missed a short jumper with 34 seconds to go. Brigit Hesser was fouled and made two free throws 15 seconds later for a 69-66 Pitt State edge.

Nikola Kacperska made one of two free throws for the Tigers with 13 seconds to go, but Jeronimus iced the game with two charity shots two seconds later.

FHSU's Chelsea Mason led all scorers with 20 points, while Kate Lehman added 15 points and 11 rebounds.

The Gorillas will continue a four-game road swing next Wednesday (Feb. 19) when Pitt State travels to Tahlequah, Okla., to face Northeastern State University.
