Several gay and lesbian books to local libraries in Pittsburg

Updated:

More books with gay and lesbian content will soon be available to readers at Pittsburg libraries.
Two groups presented the public library with the new reading material on Monday. It's part of an outreach effort by the organizations.
"The point of the Pittsburg Public Library is to provide access to all people," said Director of Pittsburg Library Bev Clarkson.
More than a dozen fiction and non-fiction books were donated by Southeast Kansas National Organization for Women and Pittsburg State's Gay Straight Alliance.
All books cover gay and lesbian related topics.
"I think books can be a refuge to people that perhaps feel un-welcomed or unsafe in a community," said SEK-NOW Coordinator Megan Stoneberger.
Some of the books will also go to Pittsburg High School and a library at Pittsburg State University.
"When we told people what we were trying to do I was flabbergasted at how generous people were because they support the library, the LGBT community, and the cause," said Stoneberger.
One parent didn't want to be identified but felt the public library should restrict the book to certain readers.
"Maybe those books should be sectioned off to you know research capabilities on gay issues or things like that but not to a young generation of kids."
The books will be available for check out in a couple weeks.
