Southeast Kansas School District divided over American Flag Display

Updated:
An American Flag display at a Southeast Kansas School is causing some controversy.

The flag is displayed inside the Fort Scott High School gymnasium, and is used during the National Anthem.

But what's on top of the flag has one board member demanding part of the display to come down.

Two local businesses who made the display "Skitch's" and "Twister Trailer" are the names on the outside of the box holding the flag.

Kevin Allen, owner of Skitch's says other district's have similar flags and signage on the outside.

"I just don't understand. Somewhere 30 minutes from here can have something like that but we can't," said Allen.

School board members approved the display in a 5 to 1 vote.

And after seeking advice from Senator Moran's office, the district may review the plans.

"I think now we have some further discussion, and we have a decision to make on whether or not we move that advertisement," said USD 234 Superintendent Diane Gross.

Area veterans and school administrators say they didn't have any concerns before or immediately after the display was finished. Allen wants to know - why now?

"I don't want to be un-American I want to do the right thing obviously or we wouldn't of taken the time the effort - or time away from our kids in order to build this. We wanted to build a legacy and say we did something for our school, our community, our veterans," said Allen.

Superintendent Gross says there could be more discussion at the upcoming school board meeting.
